I am going to illustrate in some fashion the poems for the the posters and the postcards. Choosing certain poems and depicting what the poems is talking about , or rather how I personally interpret that poem. Old Book New : concept development

Poems of Love - Ella Wheeler Wilcox

This is the book that I have decided to use for the first edition of Old Book New. It is a tiny book filled with poetry by American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox.

" Ella Wheeler Wilcox

     1850–1919
Ella Wheeler Wilcox was born in Johnstown, Wisconsin and her poetry was being published by the time she graduated from high school. Her poetry was very popular, generally written in plain, rhyming verse. Her works includePoems of Passion (1883), A Woman of the World (1904),Poems of Peace (1906),Poems of Experience (1910), and Poems (1919).  "

I have decided to use this old book for Old Book New as I myself have had it for a number of years but I've never read it, and as Old Book New is all about getting people to notice and read old books I felt it quite fitting that this gave me an opportunity to read the book and use it.

Old Book:

To add to the reminder that Old book New is taking an old book and reinventing it, the old book will be copied and then shredded, which will act as part of the packaging. This will be a reminder of that old book

Range:

Within each pack I Want their to be a range that will remain constant with each issue. This will add a sense of unity between each edition. The range will be : one screen printed poster, five postcards, and a zine.

Colour / Boarder

Another constant that will bring all the subscriptions together is the use of a boarder, it is visually recognisable and will make every edition of Old book New work together so that you can display the poster for example as a series.

Old book new : research

Research -

Antique Shops:

To gain an understanding and enhance my appreciation for old books I went on a mission to discover and look at as many old books as possible.  Above is an antique shop where they had rows and rows of old books he things I was looking at were: Covers, stock, illustration, pictures, typography. It was really good to find some books to study in detail although I did not buy any for the project as I want to focus on old books from charity shops as this is part of the context of where the book would be sold.

Book shop:

This is an image I took whilst researching into book shops. Village bookshop is an independent store which would be suitable for Old Book New to be sold at. They sell an array of publications in all shapes and sizes at village ranging from lo-fi to luxurious. As Old book new is more like a 'fanzine' to the original book I feel it would be more appropriate to house this book in an independent bookshop like village rather than a large corporation like waterstones, as it will be a lo-fi diy style execution which is a lot more suited to village.

Formats:

The Old Book New subscription will be a range of produces so I have researched into a number of feasible products that could be suitable for the pack. Such as zines, post cards and T-shirts. It has been usefull to look at a range of different products from lo-fi to luxurious pretend ephemera. I want to keep the range simplistic so that the meaning of Old Book New doesnt get diluted by jazzy finishes.
